During a recent community needs assessment, our team visited a household led by a widowed mother caring for several children under challenging conditions. The family relies on irregular income from washing clothes for others, which is often insufficient to meet daily needs. Access to education and healthcare is limited, and a young child in the home is currently unwell. The living environment also presents safety concerns. This assessment highlights urgent needs in education, healthcare, stable income, and improved housing, areas we are preparing to address through our follow-up support efforts.
While in the field in Ntuusi, Masaka, we held a meeting with caregivers and their children through a local church. The discussion focused on the financial challenges affecting consistent school attendance, particularly school fees, and outlined a clear plan to support vulnerable families as soon as funds become available. Being present in the community and having these direct conversations allowed us to listen, understand their realities, and respond in a way that is grounded in their actual needs.
At Simple Mummies Primary School, we also support the netball team by providing essential sports equipment and taking part in identifying children with potential in sports. Through this engagement, we create space for the children to grow not only academically but also physically and socially. Spending time with the team allows us to see their confidence, teamwork, and enthusiasm firsthand, while ensuring they have the resources and encouragement needed to develop their talents.
At Simple Mummies Primary School, one of our partner schools, we support children’s education through a shared-fee model where families pay half of the school fees and we cover the remaining portion. During this visit, we spent time in the classroom with the children and teachers, observing their learning environment and engaging with them directly. Being present in the school allows us to see how this support is impacting the children day to day, while also strengthening our relationship with the school and ensuring that each child we support is consistently attending and learning.
